The Krupp 275 bucket excavator is one of the largest land vehicles in the world. Initially put into operation in 1959, the machine was used to extract coal and overburden from the Zukunft opencast mine in Germany. Following carburization, it was moved to the Inden opencast site where it remained in use until 2001. Following an overhaul in 2009, the machine has been operational at the Inden site, a 4,500 ha coalfield with an operating area of around 1,700 ha and an annual output of approximately 20 million tonnes of lignite. The excavator is in use on the 2nd and 3rd level of the site until early September. Inspection is available by appointment only.
